Lake City, Colorado - Day 2

We started this morning with wildlife, nibbling foliage by the garbage cans at the inn.

We headed up Engineer Pass this morning.  We only drove about 10 miles before the road got too bumpy.  Whitmore Falls is at the 10 mile point.

I stacked some rocks to remember our trip.

There were two sets of stairs like this - I made it but was a bit uneasy.  I like having handrails!

Ron climbed down further than I did and got this photo.  

We ate our leftover pizza for lunch at the Inn and read and napped all afternoon.  Around 5:00 we decided to go on one more adventure, up Cinnamon Pass in search of the ghost town of Sherman.  Another guest had told us about it and said it was an easier drive than Engineer Pass had been.  

After bingo at the Armory (didn't win anything) we had dinner at Southern Vittles and drove around town in search of more wildlife. 

We headed home on June 30th, driving to Amarillo and then on to Keller on July 1st.  These photos were of Lake San Cristobal overlook.  The trees have grown so much that it's hard to see the lake.  The dead trees are from a beetle infestation that has ravaged the pine trees.  The beetles don't like the aspens so they were not affected.  It was so sad to see so many brown trees.  Dead trees were being logged on the sides of the roads to prevent fire from a lightning strike spreading to town.  

Lake City, Colorado - Day 1

On our first full day at Inn at the Lakes in Lake City we rode out to North Clear Creek Falls to see if it looked the same as the last time we were here in 2010.  Just as beautiful as last time.

We drove around Deer Lake and along the creek, up to Powderhorn and back to Lake City on 149, heading south from Gunnison.  It was a long drive but scenic.  We stopped by a shady spot by the creek and had a picnic on a quilt.

Dinner on Monday was a Poker Alice Pizza.  Their pizzas are huge so we'll have lunch later this week.  Monday, when we arrived at LC, we went straight to the Medical Center - I had developed a UTI.  It was a miserable two day drive, but I felt much better after 24 hours on an antibiotic.

As we drove into LC, we passed the Alferd Packer Massacre Site.  I noticed the sign and said "Oh, there's a massage place here".  We had several good laughs about that!  I researched Alferd Packer and found he was a cannibalist.  Hired as a guide for 5 men trying to get to LC for the silver mining, when he arrived at LC he was alone and had their wallets and cash.  Story goes that he killed them and ate them to survive!  What a gruesome story to commemorate with a highway marker!

Late Tuesday afternoon Lake City lost power for a couple of hours.  We went into town looking for dinner and found a restaurant north of the river that still had power.  The Climb - Elevation was a nice restaurant and we enjoyed chicken pot pie for me and pork chops for Ron.  Power was restored when we returned to the Inn after dinner.
