Costa Rica - Day 3

Day 3 was Mother's Day and we moved to Tortuguero National Park.  There are no roads to Tortuguero, just rivers, so the first picture is of a boat like the one we traveled on to get to our next lodging.

Here's the town square of Tortuguero:

Here's our cute little cabin at Anhinga Lodge:

This is our room in the jungle - no a/c, only overhead fans and windows with screens, no glass.  It really wasn't bad after about 9:00 p.m. except for the things that fell out of the trees and hit the roof, sounding like a gunshot.  Turned out to be a small fruit or nut about the size of a golf ball but it sounded like a cannon when it hit the metal roof!  Then there were the howler monkeys that woke us at 5:00 each day we were there.  Oh well, who wants to sleep on vacation - we might miss something.

After getting settled in our room, we took the boat back across the river to the town of Tortuguero.  We saw a presentation at the Green Turtle Research Station.  Turtle nesting season at Tortuguero is late July through October so we didn't see turtles except on video.  Then on to the beach - this is the caribbean and the sand here is black.

We walked back to the town, passing the school.  Love the colorful buildings.

This is downtown Tortuguero, one dirt road.

Skipped the coconut, remembering my experience with fresh coconut in Hawaii.

Back at our lodging, a little bit wet, but having fun anyway.  It's amazing how much stuff you can do without when you're told to pack what you need in one bag, weighing no more than 25 lbs.  There was no TV or telephone at our lodge but there was free WiFi in the office area.  Why didn't I bring my phone or iPad???

OMG, no a/c in that humid climate?! UGH! Reminds me of the condo we stayed in in Hawaii w/ no a/c. We could barely sleep at night it was so WET!! The sheets felt like they'd just been taken out of the washer.
