We started our Alaska vacation in Fairbanks at the Sophie Station Hotel. Ron found this quilt shop next door to the hotel and I had to shop, of course. We were amazed at the flowers around the hotel. We had rain most of the day which is somewhat normal for Alaska. We spent today on our own since our tour starts on 8/25. We had breakfast at a Carl's, Jr. and then walked to Brewsters Bar & Grill for lunch. We checked out an antique store on our search for a lunch option. Found a moose head ($75) but thought the shipping might be prohibitive so I didn't buy it. After a quick look at the quilt shop, we caught the trolley for a ride around Fairbanks. Back to the hotel to meet the tour director and then another trolley ride to Pioneer Park for a walk around. It was interesting - old buildings had been reassembled on site and housed gift shops, etc. We watch a few minutes of square dancing in one of the buildings. Decided to walk back to the hotel - big mistake! Should have caught the trolley - my tail feathers were really draggin' by the time we got back to Sophie Station.
